The physicians of IPPNW and the Nation-wide Human Rights Organisation for Refugees PRO ASYL remind the 5. Anniversary of Kola Bankole’s dead, who was suffocated by a gag during the 6. attempt to deport him on 30 August 1994 in a Lufthansa-plane at Frankfurt airport. IPPNW and PRO ASYL call upon again, to stop all practices of deportation dangerous to life and to put the whole deportation system in Germany to the test.
The spokesperson of PRO ASYL said:“ The deportation practice is the most visible expression of a policy aiming at defence, sealing off and deterrence. The individual by its fear, despair and uncertainty is disappearing from view at all. The prevalence of the commandment of human dignity should apply to all measures of police and Federal Border Guard. It means, that every use of compulsion and compulsive means should be stopped, where it is required by the right on life and physical integrity.“
In Germany and other European countries there have been known since 1991 seven cases of death from suffocation in detention due to forcible return. In no German case , where gags had been used, the involved officers has been charged.
